It's been
four years
since
Mercedes-Benz
redesigned
the iconic
SL roadster,
so the
company
picked the
2015 Los
Angeles Auto
Show to roll
out a
mid-cycle
refresh. The
2020 Mercedes-Benz
SL now
sports a
front fascia
that pulls
some
inspiration
from the
high-performance
AMG GT, with
a wider
grille,
larger air
inlets and
slightly
modified
headlights.
Inside, the
changes are
subtle: a
new steering
wheel,
larger
infotainment
screen and
remodeled
seats.
The SL's
mechanicals
get more
significant
changes, as
all models
now get
all-wheel-drive
as standard
equipment.
The SL450
replaces the
SL400 as the
base model
and gets a
boost in
output to
362 hp and
the SL550 is
now good for
449 hp.
These two SL
models now
come with a
new
nine-speed
automatic
transmission.
The Active
Body Control
(ABC), which
is standard
on SL63 AMG
and SL65 AMG
variants,
now feature
a "curve
tilting"
function
that reduces
the
sensation of
body roll
while
cornering.
This
suspension
can also
raise the
car's ride
height to
clear steep
driveways or
rougher
roads.
Rounding out
the changes
for 2019 is
the ability
to deploy or
stow the
folding
hardtop at
speeds up to
25 mph and
an automatic
trunk
separator.
